fcWhatsNewEarly April, Family Connections held its first Quality Improvement Fair. This event was planned to give Staff and Judges the opportunity to review Process Improvement Project Displays for each FAMILYConnections program and to discuss the work each program has undertaken to improve service delivery. Members of FAMILYConnections’ Board of Trustees served as Judges. This was a great day of sharing by everyone involved.

The Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT), managed by FAMILYConnections, coordinated a wider participation of local police departments for Take Back Day in Essex County this year (April 30th) with the help of the Essex County Chief’s Association and the Essex County Crime Prevention Officers Association.  Seven (7) temporary collection sites were set up for Take Back Day in addition to the 10 permanent sites in the County.  This countywide collaboration kicked off with a press Conference late April.  Attendees included:

  • Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura
  • Governor James McGreevey
  • Assemblywoman Sheila Oliver
  • Essex County Freeholder Britney Timberlake

On Friday May 13th, Family Connections’ Culture Connections program held its Fourth Annual Culture Connections Conference at Montclair State University. The demand for the conference was high and registration slots “sold out”. In attendance at the conference were 171 staff from 52 agencies!!!   Dr. Michael Fowlin provided the keynote performance followed by morning and afternoon workshops. Workshops included:

  1. Understanding Domestic Violence through a Social Justice Lens
  2. A Modern Understanding of Socio-Economic Cultural Differences
  3. The DSM-5 Formulation Interview as a Model of Clinician Cultural Competence
