ESSEX COUNTY LGBTQ+ SURVEY
Help ADAPT bring resources to the LGBTQ+ communities in Essex County. The survey is available and will be open through April 26, 2021. The survey is open to all Essex County LGBTQ+ residents over 18 years old.

LUNCH & LEARN SERIES
Join Family Connections’ ADAPT Coalition & Leading to Change for a FREE 30-minute professional development workshop to help you grow in your profession as we shift to a new, post-pandemic work environment.
Registration is REQUIRED for this FREE event. The Zoom Meeting information will be provided upon registration.
SBIRT VIRTUAL TRAINING
Family Connections’ ADAPT Coalition is collaborating with NJCRI, and the Newark Pride Center to host a training for staff members and management from organizations who serve LGBTQ+ clients and school staff/administrators.
This 3 hour training will be split into two (2) sessions:
- First session: Tuesday, April 20, 2021 from 10:00am – 11:30am.
- Second session: Tuesday, April 27, 2021 from 10:00am – 11:30am.
* In order to attend this training, you MUST be available for both sessions.
About SBIRT: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) is an approach to the delivery of early intervention and treatment to people with substance use disorders and those at risk of developing these disorders.
Featured trainer: Paul Warren, Deputy Executive Director NDRI-USA, Inc.

INTERFAITH ROUNDTABLE TRAINING
Family Connections’ ADAPT Coalition invites faith-based leaders and community members to join us in a virtual roundtable discussion regarding online gaming and gambling addiction.
Daniel Trolero, Assistant Executive Director of The Council on Compulsive Gambling of New Jersey, will discuss problematic gaming and gambling use, the impact of COVID-19, warning signs, signs and symptoms of addiction, protective and risk factors, and preventative strategies.
During our table talk discussion, share your thoughts and concerns with like-minded community partners and leave with actionable items to implement in your organization.

Join Family Connections’ ADAPT Coalition, William Paterson University student Tiana Mitchell, and Yisel Alaoui from the Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern New Jersey on Tuesday, April 6, 2021, at 7:00 pm for this FREE webinar titled “Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder for Young Expectant Mothers.”
The presentation will be pre-recorded and then it will premiere on ADAPT’s YouTube page at the scheduled time. You will have an opportunity to interact with ADAPT in the YouTube comments section by commenting on the presentation and asking any other questions you would like us to answer.

YOUTH TOBACCO ACTION GROUP (YTAG)

Family Connections’ ADAPT Coalition is hosting our Incorruptible.Essex Spring Meet and Greet Virtual Event for youth ages 13 to 18 living or attending school in Essex County. We’re kicking off spring with a fun, virtual evening of games and prizes! Teens will meet our Incorruptible.Essex Youth Group and learn about activities they can do to live a substance-free lifestyle and become a youth advocate.

ESSEX COUNTY COMMUNITY SURVEY
Our team is working to collect data that will help us understand some substance use trends occurring in Essex County during the pandemic. The survey is completely confidential and anonymous and is available in an electronic format. Any Essex County resident can complete the BRIEF survey by clicking on the following link: https://www.research.net/r/YKBHGPV
We will be keeping the survey open through March 19, 2021. We are asking all of our coalition members and partners who live in Essex County to complete this survey. Once completed, kindly share the survey with your network!

YOUTH TOBACCO ACTION GROUP (YTAG)
The Incorruptible.Essex Youth Tobacco Action Group (YTAG) Program is for Essex County youth ages 13-18 who are interested in improving their community and saving lives. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability, and death in the U.S. 90% of daily cigarette smokers first tried cigarettes by age 18. 99% tried smoking by age 26. Recent increases in the use of e-cigarettes is driving increases in tobacco product use among youth. By preventing youth tobacco initiation, millions of lives can be saved. Teens will create social media campaigns, educate the community, and advocate for policy changes. Youth can win gift cards, earn community hours, learn valuable skills, participate in free leadership events, and boost college applications and resumes.

YOUTUBE WATCH PARTY SERIES
The National Institute of Health recently presented findings from research in Molecular Psychiatry highlighting the impact COVID-19 and its complications have on individuals with a substance use disorder. This means that we have an immediate need to work together to support individuals suffering from substance use disorder and their families and prevent substance use during the current pandemic.
Join Family Connections’ ADAPT Coalition and CarePlus NJ’s Family Support Center for this FREE webinar titled “Assisting Families with Substance Use Disorder Treatment Services,” which was released on Monday, March 15, 2021. ADAPT Senior Manager Joel Torres facilitated a presentation from Family Coordinator Ratna Joshi-Nelson, M.S., DCAR, CJ, HeD.

WELLNESS INITIATIVE FOR SENIOR EDUCATION (WISE)
Family Connection Inc.’s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT) Coalition is a group of people who care about and work together on different substance abuse prevention initiatives throughout Essex County. One of ADAPT’s initiatives is the Wellness Initiative for Senior Education (WISE) Program, a curriculum-based health promotion program that aims to help older adults and caregivers to increase their knowledge and awareness of issues related to health and the aging process, including prescription medication misuse and abuse. Sign up for our FREE virtual classes for older adults and caregivers in Essex County. Classes start March 16 and end April 20 from 5pm-6pm.
